Gluten is a protein which is found in wheat and barley. It is thus present in various bread, cookies, and pasta, as well as cereals. Many people have to have a gluten free diet because they have a gluten intolerance. However there is the belief that when one retains a gluten free diet, he or she will be in a better position to lose weight. In reality cutting out grains that have gluten, and replacing them with alternatives that are gluten free is solely going to help you keep your celiac disease under control. There is no evidence that a gluten free diet is similar to a weight loss diet. The only advantage is that gluten free grains can be relatively low in calories, and so as a result you would be decreasing your caloric intake if you stick to them. However going gluten free with the main intention to lose weight is a myth and not recommended at all.
The only people that should stick to a gluten free diet are those who have a wheat allergy, celiac diseases or a non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Unless you suffer from any of these conditions you should avoid a gluten free diet. In reality swapping bread, pasta and cereal, for gluten free alternatives will not do you any good, provided that you do not suffer from any of the above mentioned conditions. Basically gluten free products contain just as many or sometimes even more calories and sugars, than those which contain gluten. There are also a number of studies that pertain that gluten may have certain health benefits, such as lowering triglycerides and keeping beneficial gut bacteria to a proper level.
The reality is that whole grains should form an integral part of our diet. Simply foregoing them with the aim of losing weight is not a good idea at all. Gluten is neither making you gain weight, nor is it harmful to your health, unless you have an intolerance to it. Do not be fooled by statements that gluten free foods are better for your health, and that they can help you lose weight. The real fact is that they tend to be more expensive, and packed with calories and sugars to help improve their tastes and texture. Generally they will also contain less fiber, which is important for our immune system. Moreover gluten free products generally are low in calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and B vitamins, which are all important for a nutritious diet. Weight loss does not come by opting for gluten free products. It is only as a result of a balanced and healthy diet. So rather than believing in this myth just focus on what you are eating, opt for whole foods and an eating plan that is made up of nutritious foods, and couple that up with daily exercise. If you truly wish to lose weight, you should avoid cutting any nutrient from your diet, and this also applies to gluten. Simply focus on eating a variety of organic and nutritious foods and exercise regularly in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That will do the trick!
