It is a known fact that being overweight is something that affects many people’s lives, and there are millions of people who have this problem. When a person is overweight chances are that he or she suffers from low self-esteem simply because society in general prefers skinny people. And to top that up, having excess pounds does not only affect your life, activities and your weight, but there are various health problems that are caused by being overweight. Some of these health risks include:
- High cholesterol – when a person is obese or overweight he has an increased risk of having abnormal blood fats. There will be a combination where triglycerides and LDL are at a high level, whereas the HDL is at a low level. The former are the bad cholesterol kinds, whereas the latter is referred to as the good type of cholesterol. High cholesterol can lead to heart disease, stroke and even diabetes.
- High blood pressure – people who are overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. The additional fat tissue in your body requires nutrients and oxygen, and hence this leads to the blood vessels needing to circulate more blood. As a result the heart will need to pump more blood, leading to more pressure on the artery walls. This in turn leads to high blood pressure.
- Heart diseases and strokes – as the arteries harden when one is obese, there is a higher likelihood that obese persons suffer from Atherosclerosis. Moreover, there is the Coronary artery disease, whereby one will have narrowed arteries due to more fat deposits building up. These may lead to higher risks of stroke, angina and heart attacks.
- Type 2 diabetes – being overweight can lead to type 2 diabetes because of a resistance to insulin. At that point the blood sugar level becomes elevated, leading to Type 2 diabetes.
- Metabolic syndrome – this type of syndrome is very common among overweight people. it increases the risk of blood clotting, may lead to insulin resistance, inflammation of blood components, abdominal obesity, higher blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems – interruptions in sleep during the night, but one ends up being sleepy during the day. With an increase in weight there will be respiratory problems due to the chest wall squeezing the lungs, and even periods when one stops breathing briefly.
- Obesity hypoventilation syndrome–another breathing disorder where one suffers from poor breathing, due to high hypoventilation and too little oxygen in the blood.
- Osteoarthritis – the condition where one suffers from joint problems, mainly in the lower back, knees and hips. With the considerable weight due to obesity one will be exerting more pressure on the joints, causing the tissue that protects them to wear away in time.
- Gallstones – pain in the stomach due to hard pieces made of cholesterol forming in the gallbladder.
- Reproductive problems, particularly menstrual issues for women, and even infertility.
As you may see there are a considerable number of serious conditions that one can end up suffering from if he or she is overweight. This further demonstrates the importance of retaining a proper weight.
